We’re pleased to kick off our July-August issue with a short story by Scottish writer Laura Hird, which begins with the memorable line: "She was sitting in the car watching his house when she first saw his slut." The story upset our not-normally-squeamish web designer whose soft spot you’ll discover if you have a look. We’re also glad to present three stories from new writers: Rusty Haight from Canada tells of a strange phenomena that takes place with a stock boy at Piggly Wiggly, which gave us all a giggle; while John Michael Cummings (U.S.) writes of a young man’s visit to the grave of an old - and very special - acquaintance. Enrique Ferrari is from Argentina, but currently lives in the U.S. His story "Half an Hour," translated by Graham Thomson, traces a particularly bad day in the life of - not surprisingly - an Argentinean exile. Our Picks from Back Issues include George Saunders’ "Sea Oak," a purely delightful and outrageous bit of imaginative humor; as well as two selections from Juan Goytisolo’s latest collection, The Garden of Secrets, translated by Peter Bush, which has just been released in paperback by Serpent’s Tail, U.K. Goytisolo is considered Spain’s greatest living writer and these selections nicely show his unique style. The winner of our Cormac McCarthy quiz from the last issue is Wesley G. Morgan from the U.S. We had dozens of participants and amazingly most all of them missed only one or two questions, which shows McCarthy fans really know their stuff. This issue we have a literary quiz on Barcelona - its writers and those who’ve written about it. The answer to one is on this index page, so that leaves only eleven more. There’s nothing tricky, so have a go. Book reviews include The Lonely Hearts Club by Barcelona’s Raul Nuñez (a copy of which will go to the winner of our quiz); Niagara by Mary Woronov; Hard Feelings by Jason Starr; and Yours Truly, Pierre Stone by Sam Bain. We’re very pleased to have been picked by Writer’s Digest magazine (U.S.) as one of the top five literary reviews to appear on the Internet (TBR appeared under "Internet Envy" in a feature list of 30 exclusive markets). Browser wars:
800x 600 IE 4+ set at medium on a PC is best. Apple viewers will get smaller text -
sorry! Have also noticed some browsers, esp those on Macs won't read links which have
capital letters - if a link has, eg /Eng.htm and you get a "404 can't find"
